Instructor/Director

Part-time, Renewable Contact Position

Playmakers! Theatre School is seeking a passionate, positive and organized Instructor/Director to inspire and guide young actors through engaging theatre classes and dynamic rehearsal processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in education or a proven ability to work effectively with youth, and a dedication to fostering a supportive and creative learning environment. Experience or interest in theatre and Shakespeare a strong asset. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Instruction: Deliver age-appropriate theatre classes (class plan provided by school) covering fundamental acting techniques, games, improvisation, voice, movement, character development, and stagecraft.

  • Directing: Lead rehearsals for various productions, guiding young actors through blocking, character interpretation, and performance polish.

  • Classroom Management: Maintain, with an in class assistant, a safe, inclusive, and disciplined learning environment during classes and rehearsals.

  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with assistants, other instructors, production team, Playmakers! administration and artistic leadership to ensure smooth operations and high-quality programming.

  • Communication: Communicate effectively with students, in-class assistants, parents, and school administration regarding class progress, production schedules, and any relevant updates.

  • Performance Preparation: Oversee all aspects of student performance readiness, including technical rehearsals, costume coordination (in collaboration with other staff), and final performances.

 

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Working with children, especially in a teaching setting, is a strong asset.

  • Acting, directing or other theatre experience is very valuable.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts, Education, or a related field preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and manage groups of young people effectively.

  • Patience, creativity, and a positive attitude.

  • Adaptable and able to receive and apply feedback.

  • Proficiency in stage production is helpful but not required.

Other:

  • Must be able to pass a criminal record check and vulnerable sector screening.

  • Availability to work evenings and a few weekends as required for classes, meetings, rehearsals, and performances. The school season extends from late September through mid-May, including a break from mid-December to mid-January. Classes are separated by age and meet once a week. Rehearsal frequency for productions increases significantly in the final weeks of each term.

  • Role includes communication with families about rehearsal schedules, individual student updates - when needed, and last minute notices.
